![]() These centred largely around the settlement which Mr Zahawi made with HMRC over supposed indiscretions. ![]() Most prominently, the PM dithered over the scandal surround Nadhim Zahawi’s tax affairs in late January. It’s one thing to have naff policy ideas, but his first 100 days have also seen him make serious errors of judgment. In a Britain which increasingly resembles the 1970s, it wasn’t exactly a rousing vision of the future. Not only were his key policies extremely vague, but several of them were as good as foregone conclusions: halving inflation by the end of the year and increasing growth, for example, are both things that economists have predicted will happen anyway. Considering the multifaceted clusterfuck Britain currently finds itself in, his announcement was completely underwhelming and schoolboyish verging on the downright insulting. There was the super-fluff of his ‘five priorities’, the first major domestic policy announcement of his premiership. Polling can be notoriously misleading and Mr Sunak is almost certainly more popular than Ms Truss ever was, but without the clean slate of a general election win, he has simply inherited the animosity and weariness that many people feel towards the Conservative government after twelve long years in power.įar from being the phoenix rising from the ashes of the Johnson-Truss petrochemical bonfire, Mr Sunak’s first hundred days have been marred by sleaze, scandal and generally floppy leadership. Recent polling puts Rishi Sunak at -29 points, dawdling 21 points behind the leader of the opposition, Sir Keir Starmer (and unless we retake the Falkland Islands again, that is unlikely to improve much). Nevertheless, without the popular mandate normally provided by a general election win, Mr Sunak was always going to struggle to win the British public’s enthusiasm. In the UK, we vote for the party and not for the person. Instead, he was thrust upon us whether we liked it or not-something we usually chastise foreign dictatorships for. He wasn’t even afforded the dubious pleasure of being voted in by a rabble of curmudgeonly Middle-Englander fanatics like Ms Truss was. Most importantly, Mr Sunak was not elected to power. The new leader of our country was chosen literally over the weekend. ![]() There was also something distinctly slapdash about his accession. So when Mr Sunak finally entered office himself, he was already on the back foot. Her suicide bomber approach to economic management seriously harmed Britain’s economy and understandably elicited the ire of the masses. Mr Sunak’s troubles as prime minister probably began the day Liz Truss strutted in to Downing Street in September last year. Between Brexit (that great foot-shooting exercise), a global pandemic and two prime ministers that made The Chuckle Brothers look like a safe pair of hands, Mr Sunak would have had to abolish the monarchy, instigate nuclear war and appear on Love Island just to hold our attention. In fairness, a lot of the public’s collective ambivalence towards Mr Sunak may well be attributable to the political pummelling we’ve all had in the last few years. Unlike his two predecessors-whom I used to excoriate loudly at dinner parties to people who didn’t ask for my opinion-when it comes to our incumbent, my attitude is generally one of indifference. Mr Sunak has therefore managed to outlast even the hardiest, most chemical-laden lettuce that any British supermarket has to offer (although given the tabloid press’ penchant for alliteration, he was probably on the lookout for particularly resilient radishes or red sorrel).īut even after 100 days as PM, Rishi Sunak’s premiership seems a little flat.

![]() ![]() This is far from a perfect movie and there are some moments that just seem out of place or forced, but for the most part it works pretty well. The story is a bit all over the place, but works fairly well to due to these quirky strange characters and the bizarre story they are thrust into. As the story moves forward each character is seemingly given their own time to shine to help bring this quirky dark comedy to life. This is mostly due to the creative and interesting characters that populate this 1970's universe. At first this film feels like its going to be a complete mess, but then something happens and it sucks you right into this ridiculous world. The latest attempt to bring another Leonard novel to life comes in the form of Freaky Deaky featuring a great cast including Christian Slater, Crispin Glover, Billy Burke, Michael Jai White, Bill Duke and Andy Dick, but does it deliver the strange and unique qualities needed to bring his characters and world to life? Freaky Deaky follows an ex-bomb squad officer who is thrust into an investigation filled with rape, revenge, and explosives during circa 1974. Writer Elmore Leonard has delivered some interesting characters over the years, but up until now it was really only Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown and Barry Sonnenfield's Get Shorty that really successfully brought them to life. ![]() One can only hope that someday a director like Tarantino remakes this film the right way, and captures the crazy 60's vibe from the novel. I have to believe Elmore Leonard is supremely disappointed in this effort, since as I recall he labeled this his favorite novel. But it is what it is.and cool 70's sets and apparel (the novel was set in the 60s), witty Leonard dialog and clever plot apparently weren't enough for director Mattheau to pull this off. Perhaps I'm holding it up to too high of a standard with the aforementioned Leonard film adaptations. Everything seems out of sync in this film. Even the usually outstanding Crispin Glover as the spacey drunken rich guy Woody Ricks is tepid, either overacting scenes or underacting them. The explosion scenes are evidence of a severe shortage in the sfx budget as well as the actor budget. (Their legs and other beautiful body parts are the best things about these mediocre actresses, in my opinion). This film often comes off as a bad TV tongue-in-cheek crime show, complete with dramatic musical flourishes when the camera zooms in on the sexy legs of actresses Sabina Gadeki and Breanne Racano. Unfortunately, Charles Mattheau isn't up to the task, and characters are miscast, pacing is awful, even the score is wrong in so many places. In the hands of a master like Tarantino, Elmore Leonard's complex and fast-paced plots, with numerous characters throwing witty street banter around, really shine. I love Elmore Leonard novels, and loved Get Shorty, 52 Pickup, Get Straight and Jackie Brown (Rum Punch). We can’t believe Freaky Deaky is almost here and we can’t wait to see everyone’s squad pics.I wanted to like this film. Some feel a soreness at the injection site on their arm. Studies do suggest that up to seven out of ten people getting their second shot have some type of reaction. Case in point, in studies of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, 23 percent of people aged 16 to 55 who received the placebo complained of fatigue after their second jab, and 24 percent noted headaches. It’s a lesson that may be useful to medical professionals, who can reassure patients that most side effects are normal and predictable-and may not even be caused by the shot. “We’ve seen this in the military, when young recruits, who think they can tolerate anything, faint when they get the injections, because their body overreacts,” says Jacobson. Recent studies show some side effects, even ones from the COVID-19 vaccines, aren’t due to the shots at all, but to our own fears. ![]() The take-home message here, says Jacobson: “It’s easy to confuse an allergic reaction with nervousness or emotions or even stomach upsets from anxiety.” Half of these people had received the placebo and yet they complained of the worst headaches, or worst fever, of their lives. “About five percent said they got sicker than they ever had been in their entire life,” says Jacobson. When the researchers unblinded the study to see who received the vaccine versus the placebo, the side effects were split equally between the two groups, says Robert Jacobson, medical director for the population health science program at the Mayo Clinic. The study involved more than 300 veterans over the age of 65 who were given either a flu shot followed two weeks later by a placebo injection of salt water, or a placebo shot followed two weeks later by the real vaccine. To address this issue, in 1991, a group of scientists in Minnesota-at the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Mayo Clinic-devised an experiment to see just how frequent these unpleasant reactions were. Side effects can be a powerful deterrent stopping people from getting vaccinated. ![]() ![]() It won't black out the screen because the default resolution is different from the screen now. WARNING: DO NOT raise the resolution to the same or higher than your monitor resolution, it will recreate the bug. It should launch in window and be playable from now on. Basically just write off that edge and use the arrow keys. The other issue is that the game still exists in the other monitor you just can't see it you can click and it will run your people that way and your mouse goes past the screen making Screen Edge Scrolling annoying (because it still uses the edges of the first monitor). If that happens you can fix it by (1) setting it to a lower resolution and (2) windowing it then (3) exit and (4) relaunch then (5) full screen it and it should be fine on launch from then on.ġ920x1080 is default for me so I lowered to the next option under 1600x900 and when I went to full screen from launching in window it became 1680x1050. The only way you can play using their buggy Fullscreen is by connecting a second monitor, with mirroring off, so the other monitor goes black instead. Not knowing how isn't an issue since the internet was invented, or at least since the invention of search engines. And personally I prefer the built in full screen because I can easily switch to see my desktop without effecting the game, and access the top menu from fullscreen. On a Mac we have a built in Fullscreen which is disabled on PoE, in Yosemite it's the green button, on Mavericks its the arrows icon in the top right. But one fix Obsidian definitely could do is remove the Unity Fullscreen entirely and utilize the Mac Fullscreen. If they removed the feature that makes it go into Fullscreen even if Fullscreen is unchecked when a window is at the monitors Resolution, or disabled the blackening of unused monitor space, that would fix the bug but maybe that's automatic stuff that Unity puts in I'm not sure how much they can do working with an engine they can't manipulate. But like all problems that haven't been solved the real reason is lack of imagination. Q: Why hasn't Obsidian fixed this? The game has been out for months!Ī: From what I hear they're claiming its a bug in Unity, and Unity isn't their product so they can't alter it. ![]() Fullscreen fails so it reverts to a window, and the game is programmed so that when it is set to the monitor resolution it goes into Fullscreen even if Fullscreen is unchecked, result is this bug. The intended purpose is blackening unused screen space when running the game at a lower resolution while the monitor is at a higher resolution. Firstly, what's happening is that it is not in Fullscreen, its windowed, but the game is telling it to black out everything. So, launched your game and everything's black but you can hear the music and see your mouse cursor? Hacker and Pierson also underlined that “ Trump’s nativist rhetoric and core constituency are not so different from that of right-wing populists abroad. He said “ although American right‐wing populism has real social roots, it has long been nurtured by powerful elites seeking to undercut support for modern structures of economic regulation and the welfare state… The chasm between Trump’s rhetoric and his actions justifies a more skeptical assessment of the breadth and depth of American populism, one that acknowledges how its contours are shaped by the nation’s unusual political institutions, its intensifying political polarization and the out‐sized influence of the wealthy.” “ Yet he has stacked his administration with billionaires (not just millionaires) and Goldman Sachs alumni, while letting the swamp of business lobbyists rise higher than ever,” emphasized Roubini.Īccording to another article by Pierson, any effort to situate Trump’s ascendance in the broader currents of cross‐national developments or in the longer course of American political development, must begin by recognizing it as a curious hybrid of populism and plutocracy. Trump also ran as someone who would “ drain the swamp” in Washington DC, and on Wall Street. To him, while Trump ran as a populist, he has governed as a plutocrat, most recently by endorsing the discredited supply-side theory of taxation that most Republicans still cling to. “ Sooner or later, Trump’s core supporters will wake up to this fact, so it is worth asking how far he might go to keep them on his side,” questions Roubini. ![]() Neither the unlikely emergence of Donald Trump nor the strange juxtaposition of a government that combines rhetorical anti-elitism with unabashed service to the rich can be understood without focusing on the long-term shift of economic and political power to large corporations and the wealthy.Īccording to economist Nouriel Roubini, US President Trump has consistently sold out the blue-collar, socially conservative whites who brought him to power, while pursuing policies to enrich his fellow plutocrats. ![]() Hacker and Paul Pierson wrote in an article that while we are experiencing the full flowering of plutocratic populism today, its roots have been spreading for decades. Economists have also suggested that free market economies tend to drift into monopolies and oligopolies because of the greater efficiency of larger businesses. In other scenarios, plutocracy may develop when a country is collapsing due to resource depletion as the elites attempt to hoard the diminishing wealth or expand debts to maintain stability, which will tend to enrich creditors and financiers. In a nation that is experiencing rapid economic growth, income inequality will tend to increase as the rate of return on innovation increases. Reasons why a plutocracy develops are complex. The term plutocracy is generally used as a pejorative to describe or warn against an undesirable condition. ![]() Unlike systems such as democracy, capitalism, socialism or anarchism, plutocracy is not rooted in an established political philosophy.
